Tarte Sweet Escape Collector’s Set

I’ve wanted to start a small beauty section on The Zebra Pit for a long time and I thought it would be great to start by reviewing a couple of holiday gift sets I purchased for myself at Ulta this year using my reward points.

Tarte Sweet Escape Collector's Set Box

The Tarte Sweet Escape Collector’s Set is a Hawaiian themed palette designed to make you think of Hawaiian Christmas vacation. The theme works well for the colors that are en vogue at present and the collector’s set offered exactly the variety of shades I was looking for. I love to buy large palettes of eye shadows so I can achieve a variety of looks. The limited edition colors in this palette meant to transport the wearer to paradise will mesh well with both my summer and winter wardrobes as well as current styles. With a variety of mattes and shimmers in a range of pinks, peaches, blues, earthtones and reds, despite the promise of locale change, you can create anything from natural and professional looks for work to more glamorous looks for evenings out or afternoons in the sun.

Tarte Sweet Escape Collector's Set

To go with the Hawaiian theme, the palette is housed in a glowing golden and sequined box with gold pineapple latch. Not exactly my taste, but my main concern is really what comes in the box.

In addition to the 25 shadows featured in this collection, on the palette “doors” you’ll find two blushes, a bronzer, and a highlighter one one side, while a nude lipstick, a deluxe size Maneater Liquid Eyeliner and a deluxe size Maneater Voluptuous Mascara.

Since I use other Tarte highlighters and blushes, I knew their amazonian clay make-up is highly pigmented and lasts all day. Once blended, it settles flawlessly on the skin and provides soft, glowing color and their shimmers are simply luminescent and gorgeous, giving the skin an ethereal quality. Everything in this palette was just the same, at a fraction of the cost of these items if I were to buy them separately. I had never used their shadow before, so I was a little surprised by just how much I needed to adjust my technique when applying this makeup versus my Urban Decay and Nyx palettes. However, I’d say getting used to the differences is well worth it, given that it still looks great after a long day of running errands and going to doctors appointments. Better than some of the shadows I’ve tried by other brands that brag about their long-wearing products right on the package.

I haven’t tried the mascara yet, but I absolutely love the eyeliner, which glides on flawlessly in a nice thick line, and dries down quickly and flawlessly. It’s also easy to correct. It also seems to actually stay in place, above my eye, rather than working its way down under my eyes in the crease of my under eye bags.

Black and Orange Tarte Look

On my eyes, I used Hammock, Cave Dive, Nirvana and Refill to get this look for a Bengals Game

For $49 (actually, I didn’t pay a dime since I used my Ulta Beauty rewards to buy it), you get a lot in this kit. It’s valued at $364. Add some foundational skin and brow products and you have everything you need to create a complete look. This high quality palette could make a great gift for yourself or another makeup lover this holiday season.

As I’ve been using Tarte’s cheek products since last spring, I can also happily report for my readers with MCAD that I’ve never had any reactions or breakouts due to Tarte’s products. This doesn’t guarantee that you won’t, as we’re all very different, but I know people are always looking for product recommendations that might work for them. At any rate, the ingredients and a full list of everything that comes in this kit is available at Ulta so you can check them before deciding to purchase.

Tarte Cosmetics Are Always formulated without:

  • Parabens
  • Mineral Oil
  • Phthalates
  • Triclosan
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Gluten

Lookbook and Updates

The more I use these eye shadows, the more impressed I am with their staying power. However, I’m also finding that they never look anything like they do in the case once you get them on and those that look really pink in the box end up looking peach to brown on my face. I really didn’t want a palette full of earth tones, I wanted a wide variety, some pinks, some peaches, some browns, purples, grays and blues. I was particularly excited about the burgundy (upgrade and unwind) colors, but when applied, both have distinctly rusty brown tones.

Even Poolside, which looks quite pink in the box is more of a peach shimmer and nearly clashes with the cheek colors provided.

And finally, Resort, a very purple looking shade in the palette looked brownish when applied. I left it a bit heavy so it’s easier to see.

It matches my burgundy Deadpool shirt better than the burgundy colors do. The only colors so far that are pretty true to how they look in the box is Cave Dive (black), Hammock (silver) and Rum Runner (yellow).

Pink! Playing with Carry On (blue) as a crease color, I discovered Captain is a nice frosty pink, and Nirvana a nice matte pink.

This neutral brown has soft pinkish hues, as well, or at least it doesn’t tend toward orange. Memories is the solid brown color I used in the crease, while I went back to Captain for my lower lid and tried Checked out on my upper lid. It’s a very soft mauve that’s barely detectable on my skin. For brow highlighter, I used the Bandeau face highlighter. Because I have such large upper lids, I don’t use shadows with sparkle, as that tends to make them look even bigger and more pronounced. Since I want my lower lids to stand out, they get all the sparkle.

While I started out this update thinking I was unhappy and tgat the palette lacked variety, I stand corrected. I still have a few colors to try and will keep uploading photos, but as I work through the colors, I’m growing more and more happy. The shades may not always look the same on as expected, but once you figure out how they’re grouped and work together, it becomes less of a guessing game.
