Benefit Magical Brow Stars Bestseller Set

I have a confession to make. I’ve always been a little bit afraid of Benefit Cosmetic’s brow products. Not because I was afraid I would react to them or even because I was afraid I wouldn’t know what to do with them, though that did always cross my mind. What scared me was that I might make the same mistakes as women who look like they snatched their eyebrows off a claymation character or something. You know the ones. You’ve seen them in your local grocery or at the mall. Those unwitting walking billboards for some of the most common brow fails, whether they just be too much or way too perfect. Gets me to thinking I live in Lazy Town, only it’s not the hair that’s plastic:

Honestly, I shouldn’t be throwing shade. I have my own dark brow history. When I see these women, I’m not laughing. I’m cringing inside and wishing it was socially acceptable to tell a perfect stranger they need some help. I know what it is to be embarrassed by my lack of brow game and how painful these realizations can be, especially when you’ve held onto bad practices for way too long out of pride. I was one of those people who held onto her thin brows for way longer than she should have, and I was over-tweezing like I was getting paid by the hair. Just wait until you see the pictures (someday, maybe).

While I’ve done a lot to up my brow game in the last few years, I’ve also worked hard to avoid looking like I’m a pair of flawless eyebrows being casually supported by a barely existent human being. It’s just odd to me, especially on a woman who isn’t wearing any other makeup and for some reason you see this a lot in my region. For crying out loud. Beauty 101: If you’re going for a natural look, keep the brows natural, too.

Eyebrow Fail
I could swear I saw these same brows at Petsmart just last week!

Once I overcame my fears, I decided I’d love to try the brow products everyone raves about, but let’s face it, I can’t really afford to pay $24 for one brow pencil with my limited income. When I saw the Magical Brow Stars Kit included their top 5 products for only $59 and I had my Ulta reward points saved up over an entire year burning a whole in my pocket, I decided I HAD to have it. I reasoned not only is this like 3 years of brow product for me (if not more), I get to try a few brow product types I’ve never used before, such as cream gel and powder. They also have some unusual pencil shapes I’ve never given a go. In the kit, you get the following:

  • Full Size Gimme Brow+ Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel (0.1 oz)
  • Full Size Precisely, My Brow Pencil Ultra-Fine Shape & Define Pencil (0.002 oz)
  • Full Size Goof Proof Brow Pencil Easy Shape & Fill Pencil (0.01 oz)
  • Full Size Ka-BROW! Cream-Gel Brow Color With Brush (0.1 oz)
  • Full Size Foolproof Brow Powder Brow Powder For Natural-Looking Fullness (0.07 oz)
  • Angled Brow Brush & Spoolie

One of the things I loved about this kit right off is that you can get it in different shades, so you can get one to match your coloring. So far, I have tried everything except for Gimme Brow. I can certainly see what all of the fuss is about, because the only reason I haven’t tried Gimme Brow yet is because I’m just too in love with all the other products in this box and haven’t made my way there, yet.

The Precisely, My Brow really does look like tiny hairs on application and it works well to fill in empty spots. It works great and you can get either a highly sculpted or natural brow using this product.

The Goofproof Brow Pencil, despite its name, is going to take some getting used to for me. It has a tear-drop shape that allows you to apply it in ultra thin lines, much like the Precisely, My Brow, or do more of an all over sweep across the brows. I haven’t spent much time with it to tell you a lot about it, but I’m sure I will use it up with no problem.

The Goofproof Brow Powder couldn’t have blown me away more. I am in love. Not only does it easily offer full coverage in a matter of seconds, it’s fairly natural looking, buildable, and can be combined with a little clear brow gel to set your look. I got so stuck on perfecting how I use this product that I’ve kinda forgotten about the others. I find this very surprising, as I’ve always been a die-hard pencil user and only recently switched to a gel similar to Gimme Brow that’s sometimes too heavy and fake looking if I build it up too much. It looked flawless on this day:

Black and Orange Tarte Look

I did manage to pull myself away from the brow powder long enough to give Ka-Brow a try though and I may like it even better. I’ve only applied it twice, but I’m very pleased by the effect it provides. The irony is that I was most afraid of this product, as i was just a gel and brush combination would have me looking like I belonged in Lazy Town for sure. I was so wrong! It’s all about how you apply it and today I am wearing it on a makeup free face without feeling self-conscious about my eyebrows standing out.

Brows done with Ka-Brow!

The double-ended brush that comes in the set is absolutely divine and has become my go to for brow styling. I absolutely love it, though the brushes that come with the products are perfectly serviceable.

$59 still seems like a lot of money to spend on brow products, but when you consider you’re actually getting $140 worth of product for $59, it’s really hard to pass up this little vault of treasures. If you have a young lady in your life that’s in love with makeup, I can only imagine getting the opportunity to try these top of the line brow products would make her year. Of course, some older women like myself would be greatly appreciative, too. We can get set in our ways and the older you get, the more complicated it can be to maintain youthful looking eyebrows. Many women who have good brow game use multiple products to achieve their look, so a kit like this would definitely save money and might allow them to try some new things while they’re at it. As a bonus, you get a cute, sturdy keepsake box (it’s much like a strong, cardboard jewelry box) where you can store other goodies once it’s been emptied. I’ve already loaded it full of samples!

For those who fear you won’t know how to use these products. Don’t. Not only are there a million tutorials on how to use every kind of brow product out there online, the kit comes with a guide that suggests how best to apply these products:

Brow Stars Guide

And of course I should probably mention for my readers affected by MCAD that I’ve never reacted to any of the Benefit products I’ve tried. In addition to the brow products I mentioned, I also use their Porefessional face primer periodically and have never had any problem, even during bad flares. This of course is no guarantee that you won’t react, but keep in mind that Ulta is really good about providing product ingredients and taking returns when something doesn’t work out well for you.

As I become accustomed to these products and begin talking about brow care and what a nightmare it was trying to grow mine fuller to match the times (just wait until you see the pictures), I’ll be doing tutorials on how to use some of these products. Covering beauty is new on the Zebra Pit and I’ll have to see how it goes, but I’m very excited to be starting into this fun new area!
